How Bundled Conductors Reduce the Corona Impact on Electric Power Lines

We already know that higher voltage levels (usually above than 345 kV) require bundled conductors.

Bundled conductors have a large number of benefits associated with them. Two of them are reduced line inductive reactance and more power carriage per unit mass. Let's understand how bundled conductors impact the corona.

Let's first define the process of Corona:
The phenomenon of hissing noise followed by a violet glow and formation of ozone gas in overhead transmission lines is knows as the corona. The process of corona occurs when voltage level exceeds a certain limit (technically termed as critical voltage).

Ordinary conductors involve a single conductor per phase. The term bundled conductors involve two, three or four number of conductors per phase. Doing so increases the corona critical voltage and thus the corona losses are reduced.
